The University of Leiden (UL), founded in 1575, is the oldest university in the Netherlands. With 16 Nobel Prize winners, UL is currently ranked 68th worldwide by Times Higher Education. Besides undergraduate studies, UL offers 79 different master degrees and welcomes approximately 29,500 students. In 2018 129 different nationalities made up the student population.

Leiden is the 5th largest city in the Netherlands. Besides its many museums and canals it also has the 2nd largest 17th century town center in the Netherlands after Amsterdam.
