First semester

Data visualisation et data story telling

Objectives

Helping students discover how to tell compelling stories from raw data.

Initially driven by the proliferation of data on the Internet, dataviz has spread beyond the digital world. It reinterprets the way results are communicated within a company, the way information is produced in the media, and the way experimental research results are used. Dataviz is at the heart of all interfaces.

This course looks at the methods used to build a solid communication scenario using different forms of data visualization. It will show how to place the user experience at the heart of effective restitution. Focusing on subject production, the concepts covered are amply illustrated by examples and counter-examples.

The course will be one-third lecture-based and two-thirds hands-on.

Course outline

At the end of the course, students will be able to

– place data in a political, social and marketing context, and use it to tell a more accurate story

– avoid mistakes when representing data, in terms of schematic and visual representation of information

– build a simple dataviz from a public dataset, in Javascript

– identify the animations and data representations best suited to the message they wish to convey
